Between the Eyes

Between the Eyes

October 11 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

OPENING RECEPTION. Curated by elin o’Hara slavick of UNC Chapel Hill. Named after David Levi Strauss book Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics, in which he brilliantly addresses “topics ranging from propaganda and the imagery of dreams, to Sebastião Salgado’s epic social documents and the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman…the legitimacy of photographic imagery and the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11,” this small spectacular exhibition of Art Department MFA Graduate Students’ photography proves without a doubt the power of an image. Photography is far from dead. Rather, it expands and morphs, as all good cultural tools and processes do. These photographers address the history of slavery and oppressive architecture, cultural identity, digital manipulation, surreal narratives and the examination of self.
